1. Thomas MILLS born Denver,Norfolk married Sarah CUTRISS 1805 at Ely Holy Trinity church

2.  Henry MILLS was also known as Henry Cuttriss MILLS. He married Rebecca STANFORD, daughter of Wyatt STANFORD and Mary GOTOBED, on 16 Jul 1834 at Parish of Old Hackney, London, (my mother always claimed there was a Gotobed in the family!) (witnesses Edward STANDFORD and Ann BURBIDGE - Henry and Rebecca both described as "of this parish"). A.  Rebecca MILLS was born on 5 Aug 1837 at 27 Isabella Street London. She appeared in the household of Henry MILLS and Rebecca STANFORD in the 1841 census at Bird Cage Walk, Hackney Road, Bethnal Green London. Rebecca was enumerated in the 1851 census as the daughter of Henry MILLS at No 1, Woods Building, Shoreditch London. Rebecca arrived at Port Phillip, Melbourne, aboard the "Herald of the Morning" on 1 Mar 1857 aged 19, C of E, could read and write, occupation listed as "general servant", she was "disposed to her aunt, Mrs Mills, of Commercial Road, Prahran". The ship sailed from Liverpool on 19 November 1856. She married Thomas BOND, son of William Thomas BOND and Elizabeth RUFF, on 16 May 1857 at Christ church, Hawthorne, Boroondara, Melbourne. On 18 Aug 1905 Thomas died at Brunswick East, Melbourne, leaving Rebecca as a widow. She lived in 1915 at "Standford", 246 Blythe St, Brunswick, Melbourne. On 31 Oct 1920 Rebecca died at "Standford", Blythe Street, Brunswick North, Melbourne, aged 83 of Senile Decay and Cardiac Failure. She was buried on 2 Nov 1920 at Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, grave no. 199, Melbourne.

B.  Henry MILLS (my great, great grandfather)  was born circa 1839 at Lambeth, Surrey. He appeared in the household of Henry MILLS and Rebecca STANFORD in the 1841 census at Bird Cage Walk, Hackney Road, Bethnal Green, London. .(If this is the same Birdcage Walk as the one next to St James Park then it is a very famous part of the London Marathon. I raced along here in the 1983 race little realising my ancestor lived here over 140 years previously)

Henry was enumerated in the 1851 census as the son of Henry MILLS  and Rebecca MILLS at No 1, Woods Building, Shoreditch London. He lived in 1861 at 1 Woods Buildings London according to his marriage certificate. Woods buildings was in Shoreditch and many decades later had some grisly association with Jack the Ripper. His mother and 3 siblings were listed as still living in Woods Buildings in the 1861 census. See map below. Woods Buildings is in the top right hand corner near New Inn Yard.

Henry was a Wood Carver in 1861. He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census at Dry (?) Mills, 18 Sewards Street, St Luke, Old Street area London. He is listed by mistake as Henry Allen married to Amelia Allen. He married Amelia ALLEN, daughter of George ALLEN, on 10 Jun 1861 at St James Church, Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, England, by Banns. He began military service circa 1863. He was a Driver in the Royal Horse Artillery in 1866. He and Amelia MILLS lived in 1878 at Kasauli, India.

He was described as 5 feet, 3 inches, complexion fair, character very good, completed service (apparently he served 23 and 9/12 years to that point, before being admitted as a Chelsea Pensioner) in 1887. He was awarded a pension of 14d. He stated his intended residence as  2 Hope Place, Sandy Hill, Woolwich, Kent. Confusingly in this Chelsea Admission Register (wo116/59) he states his place of birth as Littleport,Cambridgeshire. He was a Domestic Servant in the Royal Marine Artillery in 1891. He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census at 14 Ordnance Road, Woolwich Arsenal, Woolwich, Kent. He was an Army Pensioner in 1896. In 1901 he is still at 14 Ordnance Road with Amelia. He is described as a general labourer born Cambs. His age is given as 54 but this is certainly wrong.Henry and Amelia  had 2 daughters; Amelia born 1866 Peshawar and Win. My uncle Gordon has mentioned Win and thinks she might have emigrated to Canada. That is all I know about Win. She might have been born in India. It does seem unusual to only have 2 children so there might be more born in India? Henry Mills died after 1901 and probably after c1908. My uncle Gordon wrote to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and they confirmed he was buried privately at Charlton,Kent on 3rd March 1917.

B1 Amelia MILLS born 1866 Peshawar,India.  This is my great grandmother who married a Henry/Harry Smith. He died apparently in a horse related accident circa 1894-1896. Amelia married again in 1896 to John Henry Justice

C.  George MILLS was born circa Feb 1841 at West Hackney London. He appeared in the household of Henry MILLS and Rebecca STANFORD in the 1841 census at Bird Cage Walk, Hackney Road, Bethnal Green London. George was enumerated in the 1851 census as the son of Henry MILLS at No 1, Woods Building, Shoreditch London. He married Mary Ann TYNAN, daughter of John TYNAN and Sarah MITCHELL, on 2 Oct 1859 at St Leonard's, Shoreditch London. He was a carpenter in 1870. George and Mary Ann MILLS arrived at Port Phillip, Melbourne, aboard the "Western Empire" (carrying 374 adults) in Aug 1870 as unassisted immigrants, departing on 30 May 1870 for a statute journey of 140 days. He was a Chair and Couch Maker in 1884 at 62 and 66 Wellington Street, Collingwood, Melbourne. On 19 Feb 1884 Mary died at Collingwood, Melbourne, leaving George as a widower at which time he had 5 children living and 5 children dead. He lived in 1884 at Wellington Street, Carlton, Melbourne. In 1887 George died at East Melbourne Hospital, Victoria, leaving Sarah as a widow. She married Walter Edward ADCOCK, son of George Charles ADCOCK and Mary Anne GOODWIN, in 1909 at Victoria. She became the stepmother of Walter Ernest ADCOCK, Marian Katherine ADCOCK, Ethel Florence ADCOCK, Hilda ADCOCK, and Elsie ADCOCK when she married Walter Edward ADCOCK in 1909.
